Amnesty International Presents a Two-Part Human Rights Event on Saturday, October 3, 2009 Day-time conference followed by evening presentation by Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty’s Canadian section Today’s headlines – from Myanmar, Iran and Darfur – tell us that the need to respect and protect human rights is greater than ever. However, too often human rights are sold short -- sold short for those living in poverty, sold short in the name of national security, sold short to boost trade and investment. And human rights concerns hit close to home: from the rights of the Lubicon Cree in Alberta to Canadian citizens subject to torture and denial of due process while our government stands silent. The best defense against human rights violations is an informed and engaged population. On Saturday, October 3rd, Amnesty International presents a two-part event dedicated to human rights issues in Alberta, Canada and globally.
