Amnesty International - Calgary Branch

Events and Meetings

Everyone is welcome!

We have at least one monthly event or volunteer opportunity.  Currently, we often have a monthly film screening of highlights from the Vancouver Film Festival (usually the 2nd Tuesday of each month) and a monthly informal chat and letter writing at a local tea house (usually the third Thursday of each month).  Please check the website to verify the date as scheduling is dependent upon the theatre bookings.  Special events are planned to mark significant days and will be announced in advance.

Please check this page regularly as it is often updated!

Demand Dignity Regional Conference

Amnesty International Presents

a Two-Part Human Rights Event on Saturday, October 3, 2009

Day-time conference followed by evening presentation by Alex Neve,

Secretary General of Amnesty’s Canadian section

Today’s headlines – from Myanmar, Iran and Darfur – tell us that the need to respect and protect human rights is greater than ever. However, too often human rights are sold short -- sold short for those living in poverty, sold short in the name of national security, sold short to boost trade and investment. And human rights concerns hit close to home: from the rights of the Lubicon Cree in Alberta to Canadian citizens subject to torture and denial of due process while our government stands silent.

The best defense against human rights violations is an informed and engaged population.

On Saturday, October 3rd, Amnesty International presents a two-part event dedicated to human rights issues in Alberta, Canada and globally.

Volunteering: AI Film Nights
We are excited to begin our planning for our AI Film Nights again!  Throughout the year, we will showcase thought-provoking films from the Vancouver Human Rights Film Festival at the Plaza Theatre.

If you are interested in being involved, there are several ways to do so:

1) be a part of the Selection Committee,
2) preview and rate the selected films (training can be provided), and/or
3) volunteer at the table at the theatre on a film night.

Please email Vanessa MacKinnon ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you are interested in volunteering for any (or all) of these!

Bike Ride Across Canada Raises Money for AI

Tucker and his dad are biking across Canada this summer to raise money and awareness for Amnesty International.   They will be in Calgary sometime in the next two or three weeks and we want to give them a warm welcome!  Stayed tuned for details.!

In the meantime, please follow their adventures on their blog at http://www.tuckersbike.blogspot.com/

With them they have brought 1,000 origami cranes. An ancient Japanese legend states that anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will be granted a wish. This legend was popularized by Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who contracted leukemia as a direct result from the atomic bombing at Hiroshima. She died after folding 600 cranes.

Today, tens of millions of cranes are folded in that country and others every year. These symbols have come to represent hope for a better world. Tucker has folded 1,000 cranes and he will give these out in exchange for donation.
